The harvest of the 'Nimet' alfalfa variety—registered by Prof. Dr. Mustafa Avcı—was carried out in our faculty's research and application area. The event was attended by our Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Ahmet Şekeroğlu; Vice Deans Prof. Dr. Halil Toktay and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ünal; the variety's registrant, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Avcı; and research area staff member Selçuk Yücel. During the harvest, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Şekeroğlu and Prof. Dr. Mustafa Avcı provided information on the importance of alfalfa for agricultural production and livestock farming. It was noted that, thanks to its high protein and nutrient content, alfalfa serves as a vital source of high-quality roughage, particularly for the nutrition of cattle and small ruminants. The fact that alfalfa—a perennial legume—can yield multiple cuttings under suitable growing conditions was highlighted as a significant advantage for ensuring continuity in forage production.
Emphasis was also placed on alfalfa's contribution to soil fertility; as a legume, it facilitates the biological fixation of atmospheric nitrogen, thereby helping to enrich the soil with nitrogen. The importance of selecting the appropriate variety, as well as proper irrigation, fertilization, and timing of the harvest, was underscored regarding yield and forage quality.
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Avcı provided information on the characteristics and registration process of the 'Nimet' alfalfa variety and offered insights into the cultivation and harvesting stages of the crop. During the harvesting operation, the plant's development and agronomic characteristics were examined on-site, and practical information was shared with the participants. The event proved to be a productive initiative, effectively bridging our faculty's research and practical activities with agricultural production; it highlighted the importance of producing high-quality roughage, cultivating alfalfa, and introducing new varieties into agricultural production.
