Brief Content of the Course

The integration of classroom assessment with the instructional process and its conceptual framework; the functional classification of assessment approaches (diagnostic, formative and summative assessment; assessment of and for learning); the qualities sought in measurement instruments and the sources of measurement error; taxonomic analysis of social studies learning outcomes and the preparation of a table of specifications; the development and scoring of traditional instruments in accordance with item-writing principles; the measurement of skills specific to social studies (map and graph reading, use of evidence, historical thinking, critical thinking and decision making); performance-based assessment, rubrics and student portfolios; self-, peer and group assessment; the measurement of affective characteristics; basic statistical procedures and item analysis applied to assessment results; grading approaches, effective feedback and reporting; ethical principles in classroom assessment and inclusive assessment practices.
