Assessment and Grading System

Achievement Score and Academic Evaluation

In the Bachelor of Music Teacher Education Program, student achievement is determined through a combined evaluation of semester‑long coursework and the final examination. The contribution of the final examination to the overall course grade ranges between 40% and 60%, and the exact weighting is announced to students by the course instructor within the first two weeks of the semester.

Semester‑long coursework may include attendance, practical applications, assignments, projects, quizzes, in‑class activities, and other academic tasks appropriate to the nature of the course. The weighting of these components may be evaluated together with the midterm examination.

A relative (norm‑referenced) grading system is applied in the program. In this system, the arithmetic mean and statistical distribution of all students’ achievement scores in the course are taken into account. Letter grades and their coefficients range from AA to FF.

Achievement Status and Letter Grades

  1. AA, BA, BB, CB, CC, S, and EX are considered passing grades.
  2. DC and DD are considered passing only if the student’s semester GPA is 2.00 or above.
  3. NA is assigned to students who fail to meet attendance or practical requirements and therefore are not eligible to take the final examination.
  4. T is assigned to equivalent courses transferred from another program or institution and is not included in GPA calculations.

Courses such as Piano Education, Individual Instrument Education, Vocal Training, and Musical Hearing–Reading–Writing (MİOY) are excluded from weighted GPA calculations; the minimum passing grade for these courses is CC.

Calculation of Grade Point Average

The weighted score of a course is calculated by multiplying the course credit by the coefficient of the letter grade earned.

  1. The semester GPA is obtained by dividing the total weighted score of all courses taken in that semester by the total number of credits.
  2. The cumulative GPA is calculated by dividing the total weighted score of all courses taken throughout the entire program by the total number of credits.

In GPA calculations, two decimal places are used; if the third decimal is 5 or above, rounding is applied upward.

Courses taken as part of minor or double‑major programs, as well as courses graded S or T, are not included in GPA calculations. For repeated courses, the most recent grade is considered valid. Students may repeat courses in which they received DD, DC, or CC in order to improve their GPA; in such cases, the most recent grade is again the one that applies.
