Course Objective
To introduce the participants to the basic concepts of urban geography within the scope of the urbanization process and its consequences for the evolving spatial, social, cultural, economic and political characteristics of cities in the 21st century. To enable participants to understand and evaluate the processes that lead to the spatial organization and reorganization of urban phenomena.
Brief Content of the Course
The need for urban geography; urban growth and the formation of urban macro-form; classification of different types of cities and different approaches to classification of urban areas; the whole city and parts of the city; urban building models; production, regulation and consumption of the built environment; changing approaches to understanding cities and the urbanization process in urban geography; spatial organization and stratification theories; urbanization process and demographic-occupational characteristics of the urban population; economic geography of the city and new industrial spaces; urban renewal geography; urban images and the post-industrial economy; urban transformation: effects of post-modern urbanization process on urban parts; unequal and dual city; cities as a threat to the environment and the environment as a threat to cities
