Course Objective
The aim of this course is to enable prospective teachers to grasp the importance of language and culture, and to understand the interrelationship between language, the cornerstone of society, and culture, its primary source and reflection, and the society that this relationship creates.
Brief Content of the Course
Fundamental concepts related to language and culture; sources and elements of culture; oral and written culture; material and spiritual culture; culture from individual and societal perspectives; culture as a unifier and a divisive factor; acculturation, acculturation, cultural diffusion, and adaptation; culture from the perspective of cognitive, symbolic, and structural-functional approaches; language as a system of symbols; language and language acquisition from an individual perspective; the impact of language on human consciousness; the function of language to carry knowledge and culture and to establish social relationships and communication; the development and transmission of language and culture; national identity and language; the dynamics of changes in culture and language; discussions of the interaction between changes in culture and language; national cultures; globalization, multilingualism, and multiculturalism.
