Course Objective
Students will gain an understanding of the key issues and techniques for extracting information from digital images. They will have a good knowledge of well-established methods for decomposing an image into its basic elements (edges, regions and other features). They will also be introduced to more experimental high-level image understanding methods.
Brief Content of the Course
The field of Image Processing and Computer Vision is growing rapidly. The growth in this field has been both in breadth and depth of concepts and techniques. Computer Vision techniques are applied in fields ranging from medical imaging to remote sensing, from industrial inspection to document processing, and from nanotechnology to multimedia databases. This course is open to graduate students. The aim of the course is to introduce the basic techniques of Image Processing and Computer Vision. Higher level experimental image analysis techniques such as image sequence analysis are also covered. The course aims to provide the details that will allow the use of vision algorithms in practical applications. As with most emerging fields, not all aspects of Image Processing and Computer Vision are useful for designers of a vision system for a particular application. In order for a designer to be successful in designing or evaluating a vision system for a specific application, they need to know the basic concepts and techniques.
